Maity Schrecengost
Maity Schrecengost is an author and former classroom teacher now specializing in helping K-5 teachers teach elaboration and writing craft. She is the author of Researching Issues, Writing Whizardry, Writing Whizardry (Second Edition), Voice Whizardry, High Above the Hippodrome, Research to Write, Researching Events, Researching People, Write to be Read, and the award-winning Tasso of Tarpon Springs, and Panther Girl.
Maity is a skilled teacher-trainer, and she presents workshops at schools and libraries, professional conferences, and writers' institutes. Maity's engaging approach to research and her love of Florida history make her a sought-after speaker at Young Authors' conferences and school in-service workshops and seminars.
Writing Education and Research Workshops
Workshop length of all programs is adjustable. Each workshop is custom-tailored to the needs of the specific school.
Loud and Clear
Voice, the writer's personal imprint on writing, often missing in young writers' work, needs to be nurtured. Maity provides activities to help teachers discover their own writing voices as they learn how to help their students find their own. This workshop also provides teachers and administrators a vehicle for Professional Growth Plans. For teachers and administrators of grades 4-8.
Your Child, the Writer
Designed for PTOs, this presentation works well with a school-day visits and/or an all-day teacher presentations. The program gives parents specific strategies for helping their children develop writing skills. Parents are encouraged to explore their own feelings and past experiences with writing. Practical ways to support the school's writing program are presented. (For Parents of K-8 Students)
Writing Whizardry
Maity provides experiences in writing with emphasis on Elaboration and
Writing Craft as she works with teachers or with small groups of children in a school or library setting. Guided activities cover a myriad of topics, such as characterization, setting, focus, leads and endings, strong verbs, and specific word choice. The workshop can be used with demonstration lessons for teacher observation or to enhance existing writing programs. (For teachers of, or students in grades 2-8.)
Book Signing and Author Days
As the author of three historical children's novels set in Florida, Maity has a lot to say to elementary children about writing. Her vividly characterized books and compelling style of delivery create exciting Author's Day presentations. (For elementary to early middle school.)
Using the Historical Novel in the Classroom
History is just that-the story of real people doing real things in real times and places. Using many specific classroom strategies, Maity shows teachers that historical fictions is a perfect vehicle to teach reading and writing skills. (For teachers of students in grades 3-9)
