Brett Dillingham
Brett Dillingham is a storyteller, educator, children's book author, poet, and playwright. He lives in Alaska with his wife Kristy and their big black dog, Elias. Brett has been an educator since 1987 and began his professional storytelling career in 1990.
Brett tells stories and teaches storytelling to audiences all over the world. His storytelling passion extends to teaching the art he calls performance literacy, where students write and tell their own stories. He has taught performance literacy across the United States and Canada as well as Ireland, England, Russia, Germany, Vietnam, Costa Rica, and Nigeria. Performance literacy, a form of place-based education, has been integrated into various curricula at the state and local level throughout the United States.
Performance literacy focuses on students learning the concept of a story, oral language development, public speaking skills, motivation, self-confidence and higher-order critical-thinking skills. It involves utilizing visual, audio, and kinesthetic learning styles. Perhaps most importantly, students enjoy the process and feel proud of their accomplishments--they tell their stories to other students, their parents, and their community. Teachers consistently comment that all their students benefit and produce, including students with special needs and English language learners.
Brett is the author of Raven Day (McGraw-Hill, 2002). Visit his website at www.brettdillingham.com.
